3 Ways to Fix Discord Stuck on Checking for Updates

Quick Tips
  • Sometimes, a simple reboot of your computer and router can work wonders.
  • Disabling your antivirus might be necessary if it’s overzealously blocking the update.
  • Running Discord with administrator privileges can sometimes break through permission barriers.

Preliminary Fixes

  • Restart your PC: This will stop all the running background processes in Discord from working properly and allow you to check again. You can check our detailed guide on restarting a Windows PC.
  • Check if Discord is down: The Discord server can go down for maintenance, updates, or other reasons. You can confirm the issue on social media or visit Downdetector.
  • Stable Internet connection: Discord is an online service, and hence, it requires a stable Internet connection to work properly. You can check your internet speed on Fast.
  • Disable proxy server or VPN: VPN and proxy services can prevent Discord from working properly and leave it stuck on checking for updates. Turning off these programs and restarting Discord can easily fix the issue.
  • Disable Windows Firewall or any antivirus: Sometimes, Windows Firewall or installed antivirus programs can misidentify the Discord update files as malicious and prevent them from making changes. You can temporarily disable the firewall in Windows and check again.

Some buggy versions can also cause Discord to get stuck on checking for updates. Hence, you need to uninstall Discord and then install it again from the official Discord website.

Once downloaded, locate the file and double-click to run the installer. If asked, give the necessary permissions and try logging in with your account. You may also want to learn how to change your age (and birth date) on Discord.
