Basic Fixes
- Update the app: Google constantly releases updates for its apps to add new features or fix known bugs. Hence, keeping Google Maps up to date on Android or iPhone is a good idea to avoid issues.
- Calibrate the compass: If Google Maps keeps pointing you in the wrong direction or fails to show the route, try calibrating the compass manually to see if that works.
Fix 1: Clear Cache for Google Maps (Android)
Clearing the cache effectively fixes issues with most Android apps, and Google Maps is no exception. Use the following steps to clear the Google Maps cache on your phone to see if that helps.
Step 1: Long-press the Google Maps app icon and tap the info icon from the resulting menu.
Step 2: Go to Storage and tap on Clear cache.
Fix 2: Reset Google Play Services (Android)
Problems with Google Play Services could cause your apps, like Google Maps, to misbehave on your Android. To fix this, reset Google Play Services using these steps:
Step 1: Open the Settings app, navigate to Apps, and scroll down to tap on Google Play Services.
Step 2: Go to Storage > Manage storage. Then, tap the Clear All Data button.
Fix 3: Enable High Location Accuracy
As the name suggests, enabling high accuracy mode in the location settings will allow Google Maps to detect your location as accurately as possible. It’s best to enable this option if Google Maps is not showing the route on your Android or iPhone.
On Android
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your phone and go to Location > Location services.
Step 2: Tap on Google Location Accuracy and toggle on Improve Location Accuracy.
On iPhone
Step 1: Open the Settings app and scroll down to tap on Google Maps.
Step 2: Tap on Location and enable the Precise Location toggle.
If nothing else works, try reinstalling the Google Maps app on your phone. This should fix issues caused by corrupt app data and give Google Maps a fresh start.
