As is the case with most Smart TV interfaces, Google TV also lets you summon a virtual assistant aptly dubbed Google Assistant for varied tasks. It also makes it convenient for the kids and the elderly to navigate the interface. Needless to say, it can be frustrating if Google Assistant is not working on your Google TV setup.
Google Assistant is a reliable digital assistant. And, its absence can indeed cause inconvenience to Google TV users. Keep reading this post to learn the best working solutions for when Google Assistant stops responding to voice commands on your Google TV.
1. Check Voice Control Settings
Voice Control is what makes Google Assistant hear and execute your voice commands. If this feature has been turned off, you won’t be able to use Google Assistant for different functions. Therefore, the first solution we recommend is checking whether the Voice Control feature has been enabled on your Google TV. Here’s how.
Step 1: Open Settings on your Google TV.
Step 2: Scroll down and select Privacy.
Step 3: Go to Google Assistant in Privacy settings.
Step 4: Ensure that Voice Control has been enabled.
You can also enable the option to show Personal Results using Google Assistant.
We also recommend turning off the SafeSearch Filter, as it can restrict your searches via Google Assistant.
Lastly, select Searchable Apps and check whether all compatible apps can be used with Google Assistant.
2. Check Profile Settings
Google TV lets you create different profiles to enjoy a customized viewing experience. Moreover, you can turn off the Voice Control option for a specific profile on your Google TV. So if Google Assistant is still not working on Google TV, check the profile settings.
Step 1: Open Settings from your Google TV home screen.
Step 2: Scroll down and then select Accounts and Sign In.
Step 3: Select your current profile. Then, scroll down and select Google Assistant.
Step 4: Check if Voice Control has been disabled. If yes, enable it, and view other permissions as well.
3. Check Microphone Permissions
Just like your phone, you need to allow apps on your Google TV to have microphone access. This applies to Google Assistant as well. So, if the problem continues, you can check and enable microphone access for specific apps.
Step 1: Go to Settings from your Google TV home screen.
Step 2: Scroll down and then select Apps.
Step 3: Choose App Permissions.
Step 4: Scroll down on the right menu and then select Microphone.
Step 5: Select an app name and enable microphone access.
Step 6: Once your installed apps are done, scroll down to the bottom and check the same for System Apps.
4. Change Remote Batteries
The problem can be as simple as your Google TV remote requiring a fresh pair of batteries. Put slight pressure on the dimple behind your Google TV remote to remove the old batteries. Install new ones and check if the problem is solved.
5. Pair Your Google TV Remote Again
If your Chromecast remote light is pulsing after installing new batteries, it has not paired with your Google TV. Hence, we suggest installing the Google TV Remote app to reconnect your remote. You can refer to our post to learn how to install and connect the Google TV Remote app on your iPhone.
Android users, on the other hand, need to open the Google TV app and tap on Connect TV at the bottom-right corner. Ensure your Android phone or iPhone and the Google TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Once the remote app has been set up, here’s how to reconnect your physical remote. You will have to follow the same steps to pair your remote again despite it being connected to your Google TV.
Step 1: Using the remote app or your remote, go to Settings on your Google TV screen.
Step 2: Scroll down and then select Remotes and Accessories.
Step 3: Select your remote name and select Forget.
Step 4: Choose Yes to confirm.
Step 5: Pair your remote again and check if the problem is solved.
6. Update Google TV OS Version
If none of the solutions have worked so far, the last resort is updating the Google TV OS version. This will squash any bugs or glitches that might be causing the issue.
Step 1: Go to Settings and then select System.
Step 2: Choose About.
Step 3: Select System Update.
Step 4: Download and install the update if one is available.
Once installed, check if the problem is solved. It is anyways recommended always to use the updated software version on your Google TV.
