The Nintendo Switch has a massive library of entertaining, single-player games. However, part of the charm of owning the console is the ability to sit back and play some of the best local co-op games for Switch. That’s right, the console has a plethora of engaging multiplayer co-op games that will keep you and your friends glued to the TV screen.

Needless to say, we scoured the web and shortlisted some of the most delightful games that you can play with your friends on the Switch. However, if you are confused about what co-op gameplay stands for, then here’s a quick explainer to get you up to speed. A co-op or a cooperative game allows you to team up with your friends to progress through the story of a game.

Now, let’s look at some of the best local co-op games for the Switch.

1. Cuphead

Cuphead Nintendo Switch co-op game

Don’t let Cuphead’s adorable, rustic animations fool you – the game is among the more challenging platformers for the Nintendo Switch. The game uses beautiful, hand-drawn, cel-shaded graphics and is a treat, to say the least. What’s more, the title is replete with some of the finest jazz tunes to ever grace a video game.

Understandably, the game has won a lot of laurels, including The Game Awards for the best indie game. The same can be accredited, at least in parts, to the title’s challenging boss battles. What’s more, the game has an assortment of weapons that you can use to get an edge on the enemies too. The icing on the cake is that the title can be enjoyed with your friends too.

To that end, while you play as Cuphead, a friend can join in to play as Mugman. So, if you’re looking to traverse unique albeit challenging levels, give Cuphead a shot. We should also point out that the game has a DLC out right now, which adds even more bosses to the mix. Rest assured, you will be playing the game for hours on end.

2. Unravel Two

Unravel Two Switch local co-op game

Unravel Two is among the better, story-driven, co-op games from EA’s stables. The title puts you in the shoes of Yarny, a creature made up of – you guessed it – yarn, who is intertwined with another spool of thread. The objective of the game is to solve puzzles together. At the same time, the story plays out in conjunction with a plot involving humans too.

Unravel Two’s gameplay is as fun, as it is challenging. To that end, you will spend a good amount of time clearing out puzzles in co-op mode. A lot of puzzles will require you to use momentum to your favor too. So, you might have to run one yarny over a branch and then use the other Yarny as an anchor to create a makeshift swing.

All said and done, Unravel Two is a joyous adventure. If anything, we wish the gameplay was a bit longer. As things stand, you will be able to wrap up the game in under seven hours. Thankfully, the title is often discounted and can be picked up for less than its MRP, which is great.

3. Overcooked! All You Can Eat

Overcooked local co-op Switch

If you take pride in your cooking skills, then boy do we have the perfect game for you! Overcooked! All You Can Eat comprises two games namely Overcooked 1 and Overcooked 2, along with all their DLCs. The premise of the series is simple – you need to work with up to four chefs to whip up the tastiest cuisines.

But, as you progress in the game, the levels will get more challenging. As such, you will have to sit down with your party members and work as a single unit to deliver the requisite number of dishes in the allotted time. The caveat is, the initial few stages will be quite easy. However, the game will start adding more chores to your plate, including washing dishes and the work.

Understandably, the game will have you on your toes at all times. On the upside, clearing a level with the highest number of stars is exceptionally gratifying too. Rest assured, every stage in Overcooked will be a winning bout of an episode of MasterChef or a chaotic scene from Hell’s Kitchen – there’s simply no in-between.

4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Switch

Alright, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe isn’t technically co-op, but you can still enjoy the game with your friends on a single Switch console. To that end, the game lets you play on a split-screen setup with up to four players at the same time. So, with the console docked, you can have four party members race each other in a myriad of iconic tracks. Suffice it to say, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is among the best games to liven up a party!

That’s not all, as the game allows you to choose from 42 different characters too. While you can pick any character from the Mario verse, you can even race with Link from the Legend of Zelda series. What’s more, the game has a truckload of tracks too, so you won’t get bored racing on the same track again and again. To that end, the title offers 48 different tracks which include ones inspired by the Legend of Zelda series too.

Rest assured, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a fantastic game to play with your friends. The icing on the cake is that the game gets updated frequently with new content and game modes.

Editor’s note – Beware, this game will test the limits of your friendship. You’ve been warned.

5. Snipperclips Plus

Snipperclips Plus co-op Switch

Snipperclips Plus is yet another entertaining co-op game for the Nintendo Switch. The game is extremely challenging and requires the players to think outside the box to solve nerve-wracking puzzles. To that end, you and your friend will take on the role of paper pals Snip and Clip. The premise of the game involves cutting each other into different shapes to complete a puzzle.

The game offers a multitude of different levels encapsulated in a bunch of unique worlds. The levels could have you transport a pig from one end to the other or have you pop a bunch of balloons. To do so, you will have to reshape the paper pals to the best of your abilities and pray the contraption works.

You’ll also get a bunch of different modes with the title, including a stamp mode that lets you paint a canvas to your heart’s content. You’ll also get to play the original levels with your characters donning random shapes. This, in turn, makes a rerun of the levels more challenging. Rest assured, Snipperclips Plus is brimming with content and is a great local co-op game for the Nintendo Switch.

6. Untitled Goose Game

If your idea of fun is to create a ruckus in an otherwise peaceful community, then you must get the Untitled Goose Game. Notably, after a recent update, the game supports a co-op mode too. Now, you might be wondering what the game is all about. Well, you and your friend will take on the role of two geese and wreak havoc by stealing from or annoying townsfolk who are just trying to get by their day.

For instance, one particular challenge involves stealing the groundskeeper’s keys, getting him wet, and – wait for it – making him hammer his thumb. Some other tasks include stealing a golden ball from a village, breaking a dartboard in a pub, and making someone spit their tea. No kidding!

Lest we forget, the game also features a dedicated honk button which you can press to scare the living daylight of passersby. Unsurprisingly, the game is a lot of fun and a recent update will now allow you to enjoy the title with a friend too. All things considered, the Untitled Goose Game is a fun, local co-op for the Switch that will have you laughing like a hyena.

7. It Takes Two

It Takes Two is heralded as one of the best co-op games for the Nintendo Switch, and for good reason. The title is designed to be enjoyed with a friend or a partner and while it is chockablock with engaging mechanics, it also has a great, touching story. To that end, the game puts you in the shoes of May and Cody, who are planning to get a divorce.

Understandably, their daughter, Rose, doesn’t take the news all too well. What’s more, Rose has two small dolls that look eerily similar to Cody and May. So, after hearing the news, she takes her dolls and play-acts a happy marriage between her parents. At that time, her tears fall on the dolls and the parents are somehow trapped inside the small figurines.

What follows, is a series of challenges and mini-games that will keep you glued to your screen. The game is a lot of fun and the story will have you in tears at least once.
